I have recently been working on associative matching with one of my music therapy clients. What items go together? Shoes & socks, table & chair, toothpaste & toothbrush to name a few. My student has had success with this concept by using a customized version of the song “They Go Together” by Hap Palmer. I simply changed the words to reflect his targeted items. We practice identifying the items using a visual aide book that I created to go with the song and then practice matching pairs of pictures. Finally we remove the picture cues and simply sing “shoes and ____” (student fills in the blank). I’m really pleased how this intervention turned out. Most importantly, it is helping my client master an important skill.
Below you can listen to the original version of the song!
